All About Mel’s Crochet Corner
Hello and welcome to Mel’s Crochet Corner! I’m so glad you’re here to explore. I hope you enjoy your stay!
Mel’s Crochet started back in 2013. Back then, I opened an Etsy shop and started selling custom items under “Little Lissy’s.” I had generated some interest locally, but soon became overwhelmed with college, working, and trying to start a business. Little Lissy’s was put on pause. In 2016, Little Lissy’s was reopened as Mel’s Crochet. I started selling locally, and I began making a name for myself. I moved to another state, and the shop was temporarily closed. I then moved right back to my home state after eight months. Life is a little funny that way.
When I returned home, I had a craft studio space to share with my parents. We use it regularly, but I found myself gravitating to one corner of the room. It has these two comfy chairs, succulents, it’s right by the window, and the diffuser is plugged in when I’m working. This became the space where I crocheted the most. My furkids aren’t allowed in, and it’s just perfectly peaceful. That’s when I decided to tack “corner” onto Mel’s Crochet. It seemed too catchy and crucial to my process to ignore. 🙂
My name is Melissa and it’s nice to meet ya! I’ve been crocheting since 2005. My grandmother tried to teach me when I was younger, but I never could catch on. When she passed away I began to take knitting lessons. I liked it, but I didn’t find that I was passionate about it. I had been given my grandma’s old hooks and yarn, so seeing them made me want to learn to crochet. I began watching YouTube videos and reading Debbie Stoller’s book The Happy Hooker. Once I started to learn, I was hooked! Yes, I used an awful pun.
I started learning how to read patterns, and I practiced regularly. I had friends and family commission items, and that’s what pushed me to advance my skills. I’m still learning new crochet skills all the time, but I don’t ever plan on stopping.
